Div1. Senior Camogie
Portglenone 0-09 Dunloy 1-07
After suffering defeat in the first two games of the season against Ballycastle (H) & Loughgiel (A) Dunloy senior camogs recorded their first win of the league season.
Played over in Portglenone a large crowd was in attendance to watch two physical teams do battle on a rare sunny and dry evening in April.
Dunloy got the first score on the board with a point from Michaela Elliott however Portglenone kept in touch with a fine score from Katie McAleese from the right wing. Nicole O’Neill responded with a placed ball score only for Portglenone to respond in like.
With 10 mins on the clock a long ball was played into the box which broke to Kirstin Ingram who dragged the ball on the ground around the keeper to fire low and hard to raise the green flag.
Portglenone again kept in touch from the placed ball as Dunloy gave away needles frees to allow the opposition back in again. Despite Dunloy doing the most of the hurling they hit needless wides which would have allowed them to go ahead by more.
At the interval the teams went in level with the scores tied at 0-05 to 1-02.
Second half was even more physical as both sets of defenders were battling tooth and nail for each and every breaking ball. Dunloy’s defenders were extremely strong in this period with Charlene O’Kane, Annie Laverty and Aileen Martin clearing their lines repeatedly under massive pressure.
Up front Erin Elliott and Nicole O’Neill knocked over vital scores to keep Dunloy’s noses slightly in front. However Portglenone responded in like and continued to pile the pressure on the score board by refusing to lie down.
With time remaining Francis McMahon knocked over Dunloy’s final score to maintain a 2 point lead, a score that would turn out to be vital. With little time remaining Portglenone shot for a point but it dropped below the crossbar forcing keeper Liza McAllister into a fine save to tip it over the bar. That was the last action of the game as the referee called for the ball.
A good win and first points under the belt for the Dunloy girls.
