Div.1 Senior Hurling League Dunloy 2-13 St. Johns 3-07
Dunloy’s second half come back takes the points
Dunloy senior hurlers started the 2016 league campaign off with a tough opener at home to St. Johns. The Whiterock road men finished off 2015 strongly in the league and no doubt fancied their chances at an opening day win.
By the time the game had got to the half way stage they no doubt were confident of taking the points as they went in 0-06 to 3-04 up. The 3 goals all came from defensive mistakes despite Dunloy doing the most of the hurling.
The second half was a different story as Dunloy outscored the Belfast men 2-07 to 0-03. Nicky mc Keague was deadly from the placed ball scoring from all over the pitch. Despite all our play we needed a break and it came in the form of a great goal from corner forward Ciaran Elliott. He picked up the loose ball and fired into the keepers bottom right to make it 1-11 to 3-07. Nicky mcKeague scored another fine point to leave it a 1 point game.
With Dunloy pushing for the score to draw level it a long ball was played forward and it broke to Ciaran Elliott who raced through one on one to bury it to the keepers bottom right. Dunloy were now 2 in front in injury time. St. Johns tried to lob it in as time on the clock disappearred to get a break to score a goal but Dunloy defended strongly. The defenders cleared their lines and it broke to Nicky McKeague who was fouled to kill the ball. The resultant free was yet again fired over by McKeague to bring his personal tally to 0-10 for the day.
