Div. 1 Antrim Senior Camogie League
Dunloy 1-12 Rossa 0-05
Dunloy senior camogs opened their 2017 league campaign off with a hard-fought win over a determined Rossa side with the stick of Nicole O’Neill the difference between the two side.
The opening 4/5 mins of this league encounter was as expected frantic and physical as both sides fought to win possession all over the pitch. It was Rossa who registered the first score of the game from the placed ball of Orlagh McCall. Dunloy responded in kind after Nicole O’Neill was fouled. The same player then fired over the resultant free.
With the game opening up now both defences were on top as they smothered each other’s attacks. Aileen Martin fired a hard-earned ball to Michaela Elliott and she was fouled on the edge of the square. Up stepped O’Neill who fired the ball into the roof of the net to register the games only green flag. It was a lead that Dunloy would not surrender for the rest of the match.
Again, it was another placed ball from Orlagh that found Rossa their second score. Dunloy were becoming guilty of giving away silly fouls as the deal accurate McCall raised Rossa’s third score of the night from the placed ball.
Dunloy continued to push back Rossa with another free from Nicole O’Neill. It was fast becoming a dead ball specialist fight for scores at this point.
Finally, Dunloy tapped over from open play following on from good defensive work by Katherine Mullan. She cleared to Aileen Martin who in turn found Nicole O’Neill and she made no mistake and split the posts to leave the score 1-04 to 0-03 in favour of the home side.
Rossa refused to lie down and fired over a well worked score themselves after a mix up in the Dunloy defence. With the half closing in again it was the stick of O’Neill that found the score to leave it 1-05 to 0-04 in favour of Dunloy.
Neither side made any changes at the half time interval as Dunloy hit first straight away. Again it was the hard working Sinead Martin who was making the difference. Her clearance down the wing found Nicole O’Neill who in turn found Jacinta Dixon who fired over a brilliant point from near the side line. The best score of the evening by far.
Rossa were finding it tough up the slight hill on the pitch and their scores started to dry up as Dunloy stopped the bleeding of fouls that cost them in the first half. Nicole O’Neill continued to fire over the scores as she extended Dunloy’s lead even further. Rossa did finally get on the board from another Orlagh McCall free but this would turn out to be their last score of the evening.
Erin Elliott came into full forward and immediately made her mark by getting clear of her marker to fire over a fine score. The same player again provided yet another point as the game drew to a close.
An entertaining and tough game between the two sides at this early stage of the season but Dunloy were able to create more scoring chances and covert them. Overall it was a sound performance from Dunloy where their defence was solid for the whole hour. Katherine Mullan making her senior debut just out of U16 had a fine hour and was well supported by Caoimhe Conlon & Katherine Boyle.
At midfield sisters Sinead & Aileen Martin worked themselves into the ground breaking up the ball and setting up attacks for the forwards. Up front Dunloy found scores hard to come by with the tough Rossa defence but Nicole O’Neill finished with a personal tally of 1-09 and was the pick of the forwards.
