Dancing on Ice (May 2012)
On Sunday 6th May, Bank Holiday weekend, another first comes to Dunloy with the first ever staging by a GAA or indeed any sporting club in Ireland of Dancing on Ice. The recently opened Dunloy Sports Academy will be transformed into a massive arena with the local GAA club importing a 12×12 metre synthetic ice rink from UK Company Ice Magic.
This is a unique fund raiser never carried out in Northern Ireland before and tickets for this must see event are selling fast with 800 already sold.
Over the last 9 weeks local girl and former 3 times British figure skating champion Karla Quinn has been putting 8 local novices through their paces at an ice skating venue in Antrim. The 8, 4 girls and 4 boys have been practising at least 4 times per week.
This will be a spectacular event with a very impressive lighting and sound show coupled with playbacks to be shown on large screens installed in the Arena. Based on the popular TV series Dancing on Ice, it will have all the thrills – but hopefully not the spills of the TV show.
Compere for the evening will be former Dunloy and Antrim goalkeeper Shane Elliott. The three judges are Gerry Donnelly (after dinner speaker and former Derry PRO), BBCs Mark Sidebottom and local ‘County Antrim Post’ journalist Maggie Mc Williams, but as always the audience will have the final say on who is crowned “Dunloy Dancing On Ice Champion 2012”.
The local dancers include; Primary School Teacher Louise Dixon, current senior hurling manager and former Dunloy & Antrim hurling captain Seamus “Mushy” McMullen, camogie player Charlene O’Kane, Health Care Assistant Doloures McPoland, planning engineer Edel McAlonan, senior footballer David Higgins, former Dunloy dual player and Elk Bar owner Dick McKeague, and our current senior hurler Sean Dowds.
Doors open at 6:30pm with pr show entertainment provided by Justin McGurk (‘The Boogie Men’) at 7pm.
