Camog’s take out the Shamrocks in Senior Championship
Senior Camogie Championship
Dunloy 3-10 Loughgiel 1-15
Not since 2003 have Dunloy defeated Loughgiel in championship but on Friday evening in Armoy the girls etched their way in to folklore status when they recorded a very famous victory over a strong fancied Loughgiel side.
Dunloy came into this game having only one victory but were a side determined to go out and give their all and to not just make up the numbers.
A wonderful performance of heart thus followed with every Dunloy player giving their all for their jersey and in a storming first half a wonderful goal from Lauren Elliott gave Dunloy a much needed boost and they led by a single point at half time.
The second half saw Loughgiel pull back a goal but again determination and grit from Dunloy saw them peg Loughgiel back and with a second Lauren Elliott goal hit the back of the net Dunloy now sensed an upset was on the cards.
Dunloys defence which had struggled to cope with pace now closed ranks and with their midfield winning plenty of possession the worked the ball forward and won several frees all of which were converted.
With a minute of normal time remaining the Dunloy girls trailed by 0-2 but had a 21yd free. Nicole O’Neill sent the ball to the net much to the delight of the small band of Dunloy supporters and when the referee blew the final whistle the sheer joy and jubilation of the team was clear to be seen.
