Antrim Senior Football League Division 2 Dunloy 3-14 Ardoyne 1-08

Antrim Senior Football League Division 2 – Sunday 9th April – Dunloy v Ardoyne

Match report by Dominic Dillon

It was the start of a new campaign for Dominic Dillon and his team with a few new faces on and off the pitch. Ryan O’Reilly made the transfer from Drum and Ryan Elliott back after a year out was back in the mix. The starting team also included 3 of the successful Minor A championship winning team the captain from that team Cathair McGuigan and the 2 corner forwards for today. There was also a new face on Dillons management team as Martin Doherty an experienced campaigner with Loup and Kilrea senior footballers joined the setup for the season ahead.

Dunloy started brightly and were in control from the throw in a bursting run from midfield from Fitzpatrick resulted in the talented number 9 slotting the ball between the posts. The next twenty minutes was Dunloy dominance as Ardoyne couldn’t get the ball out of their half. Their defence was holding as strong as they could but from a delightful ball over the top to Cunning he calmly slotted the ball into the top corner of the net and Coby was up and running. The movement of Coby and Molloy in the full forward line had Ardoyne all over the place and this was no more evident than for Dunloys 2nd goal as a run from Coby left space for Molloy who dizzied a defender and riffled the ball to the back of the net it was now 2-05 to 0-00. There was 22 minutes played before Ardoyne registered a score and they then had a 10 minute spell to half time and with the last kick they got a goal. After 2 fantastic saves from Doherty he couldn’t prevent the 3rd attempt finding the net.

H/T Dunloy 2-08 1-03 Ardoyne

Ardoyne continued where they left off at the end of the 1st half and traded scores with Dunloy but the gap was still at 8 when a long range shot from Molloy that looked all the way a point got held up in the wind the Ardoyne keeper lost it and captain Nigel Elliott put the ball in the back of the net. That ended any Ardoyne challenge and Dunloy saw out the game comfortably. A very pleasing start for Dunloy while still not with a full squad to choose from with injuries and other commitments it was a fine team display.

F/T Dunloy 3-14 1-08 Ardoyne

A combined score of 2-11 between Coby and Molloy shows the devastating display these boys put on. In their 1st senior football game since they came out of minor they have shown as did Cathair McGuigan the transition to senior football will not be any problem.
