Antrim Senior Football Division 2: St Comgall’s 0-15 4-13 Dunloy
St Comgalls v Dunloy Wednesday 10/05/17

After losing the previous week Dunloy were looking to get back to winning ways against a St Comgalls side who have just been promoted this year – a side that Dunloy will face later this year in the Intermediate Championship. Several changes were made by the management from St Enda’s game due to different reasons.
Dunloy started strongly and registered the first 2 points, the pick of those coming from wing forward Chrissy McMahon, who took a fine score from 30 yards out the pitch. The teams traded 3 points each before the first goal arrived on 10 minutes.
Karl Fitzpatrick had been causing havoc in the opening exchanges with his direct running at the St Comgalls defence and he was involved yet again as another surge forward resulted in the ball finding Miceal Murphy and the midfielder found the roof of the net. Dunloy led by 5 points on a score of 1-05 – 0-03.
Dunloy moved further ahead when Fitzpatrick slotted a free over the bar before another long-range point from St Comgalls had the gap back to 5. Dunloy extended the lead to 6 points just before the 2nd goal arrived from captain Nigel Elliott.
Elliott picked the ball up in the far corner and left his marker in a daze before running direct to goal and from a tight angle he found the net. Dunloy now had a 9-point lead with 20 minutes played on a score of 2-07 0-04. The next 10 minutes belonged to the home team as Dunloy didn’t score again until half time. St Comgalls rattled off 5 points in a row as they upped their game 4 of them were all from well out the pitch in what was a fine display of long range kicking.
Half Time: St Comgalls 0-09 2-07 Dunloy
The 2nd half was even in opening exchanges with both sides scoring a point each before Dunloy’s 3rd goal arrived. After picking the ball up well out the pitch Elliott rounded his marker and headed straight for goal and once he got to the 21 he unleashed a bullet of a shot in to the top corner of the net the keeper hadn’t a chance a goal fitting of winning any game.
It was a crucial goal for Dunloy as just before it St Comgalls had a goal chance of their own but were thwarted by goalkeeper Sean Doherty. That goal knocked the wind out of St Comgalls who had come back into the game well after being 9 points down in 1st half.
The teams exchanged a few points each before a goal from Fitzpatrick which his display had deserved gave Dunloy a 12-point lead with 5 minutes remaining. St Comgalls scored the last few points of the game to leave it a 10-point victory to the away side.
Full Time: St Comgalls 0-15 4-13 Dunloy
Dunloy were missing quite a few regulars but the performance of the players brought in was impressive. Chrissy McMahon and Ryan Elliott playing as wing forwards popped up everywhere and set up play after play a great hour from both. Liam McCann, still a minor, had some game in corner forward wining every ball that went near him.
Dunloy needed to win the midfield battle which they didn’t do against St Enda’s but they did in this game. Gabriel McTaggart and Miceal Murphy both were superb. Karl Fitzpatrick was on his game he drove at defence time after time a good hour from fitzy. Nigel Elliott certainly played the captains role he finished with 2-02 and ran himself into the ground as he led the team to a valuable 2 points.
