Antrim Minor Hurling League Div. 1 Rossa 3-13 Dunloy 2-14
Antrim Minor Hurling League Div. 1 – Friday 19th April
Rossa 3-13 Dunloy 2-14. – Ref Brendan Toland
Match report by Thomas McLean
This was a fine game of hurling, played at almost championship pace, at Rossa park on Friday night on a pitch in perfect condition for fast hurling. This was a keen rematch between the best two teams at Minor level in 2016 and it lived up to the expectations.
Dunloy started out the better of the two teams and indeed were unlucky not to convert two goal chances inside the first five minutes. As the first half progressed both teams were finding the scores from play hard to come by and this was down to the pressure both teams were putting on each other when they had the sliotar.
The first half ended with Dunloy leading 0-9 to 0-5 with 5 Seean Elliott frees, 2 from Deaglan Smith and one from Calum Scullion. Indeed Dunloy would probably be slightly disappointed not to be another 3 or 4 ahead with the procession they had.
The second half began and it’s wasn’t long before you could see Rossa had upped the tempo of their game from the first half. Rossa went from four down at halftime to five up . But this game was far from finished.
Back came Dunloy to go a point up with some serious hard work and fine hurling. From this point on to the end of the game it was score for score and the game could have went either way, with neither side giving up to the final whistle.
Home advantage probably just gave Rossa the slight edge in this encounter. Dunloy hit 2-05 in the second half with Seean Elliott and Deaglan Smith hitting 1-02 each and a point from Liam Mc Cann.
These were two good minor teams putting on a good display of hurling played at a frantic pace from start to finished and well refereed by Brendan Toland.
On a whole Dunloy will be both disappointed and pleased with that performance. Rossa are a seriously good side but Dunloy know that they are more than capable of both living with them and winning.
