Antrim Minor Hurling County Final
Dunloy 1-17 Rossa 2-05
Dunloy Minor hurlers claimed back to back Minor hurling championships with a hard fought win against a tough Rossa team. Both sides were unbeaten this year in the league with the Belfast men only blemish being a draw earlier in the year so both sides were full of confidence coming into this game.
Played in front of a big crowd as the opener to the Senior Final the young Cuchullian’s put on a fine show of point scoring and team play that was the telling factor in this final.
Rossa won the toss and played with the strong wind at their back and the benefit was instant as they found the Dunloy net within seconds. A long ball played in fell to the corner forward who drove the ball brilliantly past Chrissy McMahon into the corner.
Dunloy got themselves settled in the first 5 mins through some great defending by Eamon Smyth at centre half who was clearing Rossa’s repeated long balls into the forwards. Conal Cunning fired Dunloy on the board with a free to get the first score and Keelan Molly weighing in to leave it a 1-point game. Rossa kept themselves in front with a long rang score only for it to wiped out by Conal Cunning again.
With the score now level at 0-06 to 1-03 Anton McGrath found the back of the Rossa net to make it a 3-point game. A long ball played in was fumbled by the keeper and the corner forward was on hand to fire the ball home to the net.
Rossa again didn’t lie down and continued to put the Dunloy backs under pressure with constant long balls. Just before the break their pressure was rewarded as they breached the Dunloy backs again to raise they green flag. The forward broke through 3 tackles to make room for the short which rippled the roof of the net leaving Chrissy McMahon no chance.
As the short whistle for the half blew it was Dunloy who would be the happier down by 1 point with the strong wind at their backs 2-04 to 1-06.
Dunloy started the second half by firing over a stunning long range free from Eamon Smyth to tie the scores. Keelan Molly and midfielder Eoin O’Neill raised the white flag to open a 2-point lead before a Rossa free reduced the score. This would prove to be their final score of the match as an impressive Dunloy back line held them scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Dunloy continued to fire over the scores through McGrath, O’Neill, Cunning and Molloy as the game got farther away from Rossa.
A brilliant performance from our lads to win their second championship in a row. Each and everyone one of them from 1-15 were flawless in their performance, attitude and commitment to win. Very hard to single out one person but special mentions to Captain Conor Kinsella, Eoin O’Neill & Keelan Molloy who gave a star show for the entire hour of the match.
