In what was one of the best underage finals seen in years the young Dunloy girls produced a brilliant finish to the match to capture the Antrim Feile title for the second year in a row.
Played in front of a large crowd in Loughgiel a late goal and point from Aine & Bronagh Magill was enough to lift the trophy as Ballycastle failed to score in the second half.
Having met each other earlier in the season there was very little between the two side but it was Ballycastle who were out of the blocks first as they had the Dunloy back line under pressure very early on. A great save by the Dunloy keeper prevented a certain goal but it was Ballycastle who opened the scoring with a point.
Ballycastle doubled their lead with another point as Dunloy started to settle and push at the Ballycastle goal. The Cuchullian’s had 3 great goal chances from Aine Magill, Caoimhe McColgan & Caitlin Cochrane but between the Ballycastle defence and keeper they blocked all of them.
The game then swung the other way when Ballycastle hammered home a goal. This would of broke most teams but it only served to gel Dunloy together even more as this would the last shot on goal they would allow.
Dunloy opened their scoring through Aine Magill which was followed up by another point straight after from Aine to reduce the score to 3 points. Another Ballycastle point left the score at half time Dunloy 0-02 Ballycastle 1-03.
The second half picked up where the first ended with Dunloy putting pressure on the Ballycastle back line. The Dunloy defenders of Cassie MacArthur’s, Katie Molloy and Brid Magill were putting in a massive shift and clearing their lines repeatedly as they put continuous balls into the forwards.
Centre half Cassie McArthur fired over a free to make it 0-03 to 1-03 as Dunloy stamped their authority on the game. Despite the continuous attacks Dunloy were guilty of shooting a lot of wides which were piling up.
Another point by Aine Magill left it a 2-point game. With 2 mins left the player of the match Aine Magill picked the ball up at the 45, evaded two tackles and fired an unstoppable short to the top left corner of the net
The resultant puck out was won by Dunloy and Bronagh Magill fired it over the bar to make it 1-05 to 1-03 to Dunloy.
With time running out Ballycastle had two separate frees which they dropped into the box seeking a goal which would win them the match but Dunloy stood firm and didn’t allow them near their goals.
Referee Ryan O’Reilly blew for full time which sparked wild celebrations from the players and supporters as the young Dunloy girls retained their Feile title they won last year.
This was a great game of camogie to watch as both teams fought for every ball and score and played in a great sporting manner. A brilliant advert for Camogie in Antrim and Ulster.
Each and every Dunloy girl was superb from start to finish as they gave everything they had but Cassie McArthur & Aine Magill were outstanding for the full 40mins.
Dunloy now go on to represent Antrim at the National Feile in Wexford and we wish them all the best of luck!
